Mushing with the Huskies
A big dream realised today when we went dog sledding
We’ve wanted to do this for some time and finally went for it.
The whole thing is amazing. I was expecting the dogs to be a bit aggressive but they’re all a bunch of softies, until they are connected to the sled then they become canine tractors. We were “introduced” to each of our eight dog team and each dog has its own character which is why our guide placed them in a certain position. The dogs are all Alaskan Huskies and were smaller than we expected but they are amazing athletes. I couldn’t believe the acceleration. You lie back in a sled which made photography a bit of a lottery but we were both given the chance to drive the team. Sheila got the downhill run at about 30 km/hr and then it was off into the back country, driving a very narrow trail between ancient pines and firs. What an experience. Our Lead dog was Katanka and she never let anyone get past her. The rest clearly recognised her as the Boss and took their lead from her. Our guide spotted things in each of the dogs and just kept them in control with very subtle commands. He even got them to change gear and you could feel the difference.
If you are a dog lover and like the outdoors, you’ll love these. If you aren’t then just bear with me!

Fantastic shots, wish we could have seen Canada in the winter. Loved the barking dogs photo, was it something you said that upset them?
